On Active Spirituality

As lovers of the world, we can live a life of active spirituality, which is not the same as spiritual activism. The former turns as a life invigorated by spiritual insights; the latter is a behavior often motivated by beliefs, which can be inspirational…or highly suspect. Today’s American world is aflame with partisan sentiments, loud, angry voices, deceptive commentary and sometimes deadly acts.

A better angel...

Certainly we’re better than this! As spiritual beings moving in a stream of prayer, we need not think we just tent our fingers and think good thoughts. Some imagine that prayer leaves no footprints but they’d be wrong to think that it always means passivity. The question is if we are moved upon to act, are we bringing a better angel to the scene? Are we moving in love, which should be the only engine empowering us…or do we mean to destroy?

The standard bearer is love...

The hateful and the evil can collapse under their own weight if we will let them, and the love that should replace them can be muscular and in-your-face if necessary until we all get one another’s attention. The world is always changing, and we’ll become warped if we do not follow along. Yes, the standard bearer is love, must be love, always love, nothing less…and this must translate into choices, actions, behaviors and living systems.

The country needs us all at our best. This is the apogee of citizenship.
