About Pain

One thing I know about pain: It will always be with us, not necessarily all the time, but it will be in the background, waiting to spring up at any moment, and no amount of spiritual practices will obliterate it altogether. Certainly we know of physical pain, which can come through injury and disease, and sometimes through the disintegration of an aging or disregarded body. And, of course, there is mental and emotional pain which strikes blows through losses of all kinds, disappointments and mistaken choices.

Inflicted upon us by God...

Many people view pain as “something that is out to get us,” and, for some, inflicted upon us by God or some other leveling edicts. In some ways, we have angered the Almighty, and now we must pay for it. I say not so! It is my belief that pain shows up to tell us that something is out of balance with us. Physical pain can tell us that there is some internal healing that is needed, perhaps in the ways we are treating our bodies and perhaps in the awareness that error-laden beliefs and behaviors eventually affect our own private physical properties, our bodies and sometimes our affairs.  It is not that we can avoid pain but that we heed what it tells us.

Real self awareness and attention...

Real self awareness and attention to how we think and choose to live our lives can make us clearly attentive to when we have lost the body-mind harmony and order we need for comfortable, healthy living. Self care, self love and needed self corrections can always be at hand to keep pain in its place as a signal of disorder, not a permanent resident in our lives. The choice is always ours…
