On Principled Living

How many of us actually wonder if we are living according to certain principles of good conduct and intentions? I would suspect that few of us actually think about the ideas that guide our lives…unless some blatant contradiction of these principles shows up under our noses, such as a public figure’s being caught with “his hand in the cookie jar”! Such a revelation should take us aback, should seem shocking to people who try to do the right thing. Often it doesn’t, though. Often we blow off the instance as just another example of “the way things are.”

Fairness, justice and wellbeing...

Principled living should be the norm, shouldn’t it? Shouldn’t we expect that most of us, and especially our leaders, will adhere to living lives guided by fairness, justice and mutual well being? And if not, why not? If our leaders disappoint, perhaps another group of leaders needs to come forth from the public to hold forth the mandate of right, thoughtful behaviors that enhance the common good.

Those...who wish to make a difference...

These times ask a great deal of us, not only those who would lead, but citizens who live by standards that uplift the least among us. It has been said that the greatness of a country can be measured by how well it cares for its most vulnerable. Is it in us to see ourselves as some of those who wish to make a difference? I hope so…
