On Christmas

In a few days it will be Christmas, and it cannot come soon enough for me this year. True, I value the religio-spiritual thoughts inherent in practices, but this year it is mostly Christian ethics that I look forward to, the reminders to be kind and generous; to care about others, especially the less fortunate; to love our neighbors; in other words, to look to the “better angels of our nature” and stretch ourselves past the nightmarish political season recently finished.

Extend ourselves...

As a familiar Christmas song reminds us: “We need a little Christmas. Right this very minute. We need a little Christmas now.” We need to remember the largeness of our human lives and touch the goodness in our souls. We need to extend ourselves to family and friends and most definitely reach across some of the divisions we have fallen into regarding others who think differently than we do. Whether we are Christians or believers in some other spiritual systems, there is an ethic that transcends religions and recognizes the very divinity we all share. It reminds us to treat others the way we want to be treated, for in this we can bind up hurts and hatreds and look into the eyes of the “other” who is closer to us than we think.

 To love and be loved...

Let us be especially mindful of what people of good hearts everywhere want and need…to love and be loved. Put forth our hands, both physically and essentially, and let us remember that Christmas is the hope of peace and joy everywhere…especially right where we are now.
