On Shame, Blame and Guilt

In the worlds of psychology and sociology the mind sets from which we operate become very important, very telling about the ways in which we perceive ourselves. Among the many references we recognize, there are three that accompany many of us every day, and they are a trio called shame, blame and guilt . Put deceptively simple, the feelings they produce in us can be translated as 1) Shame ( I’m not ok.) 2) Blame (I’m doing it wrong.) 3) Guilt (I am inadequate.) These small statements may be oversimplified, but I think they are close to the mark.

Seeds...were sown...

We all had help in forming our sense of personhood, some of it positive and encouraging, and some of it discouraging and deflating. People of power in our lives…parents, authority figures like teachers and role models…may have, sometimes unwittingly, either uplifted or put down the budding individuals we were becoming. If we were put down, hence the seeds of shame, blame and guilt were sown.

The flexible,enlightened mind...

Spiritually speaking, none of these mind sets were true. We may have thought they were because we, too, could not recognize who we were at the levels of deep spirit. The good news is that we now know we made these mind sets up, sometimes with help, sometimes through our own misperceptions of ourselves; and whatever we may have invented we can re-invent. This is the great talent of the flexible, enlightened mind.

Search for light...

It may take effort to undo some of the grooves we have etched in our minds as negative, personal beliefs, but what can be more wonderful than to discover we are ok, we can do things right, and we are perfectly adequate as we are. We can change negative habit patterns and replace them with encouraging ones that are closer to our spiritual truths. Many of us know this because we have done it. No one must remain in mental darkness unless he or she refuses to search for light!

World of possibilities...

Change does not always come easily, and no one should think that self healing is a simple snap of the fingers, but let’s keep the revealed world of possibilities in mind…and consider the alternatives!
