As people living in a democratic society, we very much like being in control of our circumstances. Indeed, such control is one of the promises of a free community. But what if that should change? What if, for some reason, we lost most of the control to drive our own lives? What if infirmity changed what we could expect from our bodies… What if confinement took away our ability to go where we wished or do what we wanted? What, then, could we expect to do for ourselves?

Perhaps it is a very good idea to remember that we, and only we, control the way we think about things. We, and only we, control what occupies our minds and how we shall respond to what comes to us. If, through anger, fear or dismay, we give our capacity to think away to a situation, yes, we will have lost control entirely. If, on the other hand, we retain a clear-thinking capacity, even in the face of something we cannot physically determine, the end result will revolve around us, and eventually we will find a working outcome.

There is no question that our physical lives are mostly in the forefront of our existence, but the life of the Mind has an immense, expansive dimension in us that we may be forgetting. We may be overlooking an element of vigorous energy that is absolutely vital in determining how we think about ourselves. Can we really afford to do this?
