Living for the Long Haul

What does it mean to live for the long haul? Well, since my last birthday was another brick along the path beyond eighty, it obviously means more than just the accumulations of years to me. Some of us already know how to do that. It has taken years of discovery, learning and practice for the human status to be able to extend physical living to several years now, and for this we should be grateful… to the pioneers who have given us wisdom about growing older and our own willingness to take better care of ourselves.

 Many more excellences...

The long haul now involves what we are doing with our extended years. Some of us have lengthened our work lives to include many more excellences. Some of us have found that we are capable of using more physical skills farther into life than we had imagined. And just the lengthening years give us more opportunities to be better at living our spiritual/human experiences.

The long haul as one of our gifts...

It has been said that when much is given, much is expected. If we accept this idea, then we will know that we are the ones responsible for the quality of our longer haul! We will determine how beautiful and magnificent our lives will continue to be. True patriarchs and matriarchs are made, not just formed from a bunch of years on hand. We will earn the love and respect of those who follow us if we accept the long haul as one of our gifts.
