Recently I
was outdoors talking with a friend when a young man using a cell phone walked
toward us and then passed us. I could
not tell whether or not he was actually talking on the phone or playing a game,
but what was obvious was that he did not look up from the cell once, not even
once, although my friend and I were creating sound and energy that could not be
overlooked. I could not help wondering,
have we not gotten so used to tech gadgets as an attention getter that we do
not even notice life around us?
Our human coping skills.....
For years it was television that filled all space if we did not wish to hear the sounds of our thoughts. Now, however, we can carry our distractions in our pockets and whip them out whenever human interaction threatens to encroach. It seems that our vaunted new technologies are not all unalloyed blessings because the cry now is that we are beginning to lose some of our human coping skills to time-killing technological gizmos.
Put that damn cell phone away please!
Will we still talk with strangers while waiting for a bus? I have also discovered that some restaurants do not like constant use of hand-held devices among the patrons due to the rude behaviors they induce. We definitely do not need reasons to ignore one another and forget how to respond as thoughtful human beings!
Put that
damn cell phone away please!
