On Family Ties

What makes up a family? Is it only those who have a blood or marriage tie with a special group? Is it an organized tribe? Or can it be a series of people who have recognized shared, internal bonds with one another? While physical ties can be wonderful and comforting to count on, sometimes “chosen” families can become so durable that we can barely remember a time without them.

Irreplaceable...

In a word, those who are on hand for us are irreplaceable, and sometimes we could have great difficulties making it through life without them. Going it alone is one of the least desirable of all circumstances to be imagined, I would think. And how much more successful and remarkable can we be then when surrounded by those who love and support us?

The Ties that bind...

Family, whether chosen or inherited, cannot be overshadowed by anything, just added to with more family. The cousin I grew up with, the chosen sister I’ve known forever, the daughter-in-law who has become a daughter… what would life be like without them. We take these wonderful folk for granted many times, but perhaps we should stop for a bit and see each face for who it is… part of the ties that bind, our family ties.
