On The Quiet Mind

I think that the notion of having a perfectly quiet mind is something of a misnomer. Through regular spiritual practices, such as meditation or contemplation, we can learn to slow down the mind’s restless passages so that we can, with effort, move from one thought to another, but the utterly silent and unmoving mind is next to impossible to achieve. In fact, when we just let our minds “go”, innumerable thoughts will dart through our minds at great speeds. What we can best hope to do is pay attention to our thoughts with the idea that we can turn from raggedy thinking to the perusal of a few ideas we may wish to examine.

A wonderful calm...

There is a wonderful calm to be experienced when the mind is slowed and an effortless joy to be found when we actually engage ourselves in an efficient, focused thought stream. In a manner of speaking, our minds begin to truly belong to us when we are more in control of what we choose to allow some entry and what we reject. We do not have to crowd the mind with dire thoughts of fear, hatred and violence. We can build a mind that tackles great ideas and works toward a general good.

Every day needs the best of us...

Every day needs the best of us. Who we are, what we do, and how we think make a difference. The quiet mind…thoughtful, interested and positive…serves us…and life itself… well.
