On Things and No-Things

Ours is very much a capitalistic culture, which means that it is more often a “thing”-based culture rather than a values-based or “no-thing” based culture. This becomes very important when we consider what we deem important in our lives and what takes a lesser place. There is no question that things, objects are necessary to get around with any ease. Certainly we can accomplish more in a day if we can get around by car rather than walking or bussing everywhere. But, on the other hand, walking gives us the outdoors; bussing can give us unfiltered time with our own thoughts.

Love often thing based......

Even love is often thing based. We usually need something or someone to love, but again on the other hand, if we know that love has healing power, we can sometimes wait quietly and let the essence of love come to us wherever we are.

Panoply of the night sky...

Actually we may be discovering that the things we have valued so much, the objects, the bank accounts may be important, but even they get old and begin to lose meaning. How many times can we count our money and get an excited “hit”? But then how many times can we see the panoply of a night sky or a rosy dawn without feeling amazed? No, they can’t last, but they’ll come again without our bidding.

A whispered word...

Funny, but most of the things I used to value don’t mean much anymore. Some, maybe, but not many. Most don’t comfort me when I’m wakeful in the middle of the night. They can’t assure me that I’m loved. A whispered word or a soft touch, now that’s another matter (or perhaps non-matter.)
