On the Language of the Heart

For a number of years my wonderful husband has been experiencing increasing deafness. There has been a sad element of loss in this, but also new opportunities for conversation as well. My best friend, my husband, my lover, who used to share so many of my thoughts now can only strain to catch a few words of conversation when I come close to his ear, so we have moved to other means of connection. Over years of learning, effort and practice, we have gained the language of the heart. We have learned to use our other senses so that we “talk” without words; we use touch to exchange thoughts of love.

 "Alternative languages"...

It is amazing what the eyes, the hands and the heart can say without the utterance of a single word! It is also amazing how skillful we have become in the use of “alternative languages.” A single touch can convey a multitude of meanings and accompanied with a knowing look or arched glance, a whole world of meanings and stories can be exchanged. In these quiet languages, clearly known to us, there are no misunderstandings, only the deep, remembered pleasures of conversations that once held sound.

Silent tribute to love...

The gradual loss through deafness can be found again once we have opened our hearts to their inherent messages. Always there is the silent tribute to love…love remembered, love discovered once more, and love made new again.

  1. I didn't know that Rev Victor had lost so much of his hearing. Hearing aids, not an option? My mom's boyfriend (age 93) hates his hearing aids and refuses to wear them. Fascinating how conversations go, how much he misses and how non verbal communication gets ramped up! Good to hear from you Rev. Margaret. Be well.
