On Doing The Right Thing
Doing the right thing is not as easy as it sounds. For one thing, while some of us may possess inner kindness and thoughtfulness by nature, mostly we do not really know innately what the right thing is because these involve moral/ethical concepts that must be taught. A child does not know it is not all right to snatch away another’s toy, nor does he distinguish between what is his and what belongs to another. Truthfulness also is not usually innate knowledge; it must be taught, usually by thoughtful parents or a consistent caregiver…and there is an element of being truthful which can at times cause us to lose out on something we may value. Thus doing the right thing may not always seem to be in our own interests and might involve true courage in doing so.
A natural grace...
We could wonder, then, why in the world we should care about doing the right thing if it doesn’t serve us? Why should we make these efforts when many do not seem to care? Over time I have come to feel that our essential Divine wellbeing is deeply involved in this. I believe that we continually have the chance to grow up as “spiritual beings living a human life,” as Wayne Dyer liked to say, and so there is a natural grace inherent in living a concerned life. We should know by now that we are not islands in a stream but deeply connected in our humanity. At many levels, who we are and what we do touches many others, whether we realize this or not.
Elevate life...
So…it is ours to do the right thing in ways that elevate life, if somewhat imperfectly at times.
