Thinking Anew

For many years the American reading public has enjoyed a small, monthly magazine entitled Reader’s Digest, which began publishing in 1922. It still produces encapsulated articles and ideas for the reader to grasp quickly. One of its old-time, frequent contributors was a man named Wilferd Petersen, who created a wonderful sentence that has stayed with me all these decades: “Every day is a lifetime in miniature.” Simple… non-dramatic, yet bringing a single truth to us that cannot be overlooked.

A budding lifetime before us...

If every day sets a budding lifetime before us, this means that we must begin each day thinking anew, not cowed by old, stubborn, hold-over ideas nor too attached to old troubles and problems that hide in the darkness of memory. Yes, we may find footing on yesterday’s concerns, but we also must be open to the newest perspectives we can muster, an openness that allows us to receive new ideas from the Infinite Mind, which holds all ideas. So what if what comes to us can be scary? This is often an initial response to something that is brand new.

A brightened, imaginative outlook...

If we are essentially beginning again when we open our eyes each morning, we need to see ourselves as brand new also, as eager and interested in the day’s possibilities as the newest infant. What might it be like to experience a brightened, imaginative outlook, to be as new in mind as a curious child? Shall we give it a try?
