On Loose Boundaries

There was a time when I thought very carefully and cogently about many things, when I made up my mind about certain subjects. I was careful to be at astute as possible about my decisions. One could say that I had fairly “leak-proof” boundaries around my thoughts. I answered as many questions as I could in advance. You’d think, wouldn’t you, that we’d want to protect our knowledge by stiffening our mental boundaries so that nothing could invade what we knew. Perhaps… but just as we protect what we know by keeping it tightly secure, nothing new can enter in to brighten our thoughts either!

 We get wiser...

Maybe it is true that as we get older, we get wiser… at least sometimes. These days at least I find that I have much looser boundaries around my mind. My ideas are more to be questioned than they used to be, and I enjoy far fewer certainties, and with so many ideas to consider, maybe more permeable walls are what is needed. We may guard our wisdoms, but we should welcome new possibilities as well. Our minds can be secure, but they can be nimble also.

Time to make way for the new...

In a world that is generating possibilities and ways to create new forms and opportunities for expression, perhaps one of our greatest wisdoms would be to know what is worth protecting and when it is time to make way for the new. Worth considering, isn’t it!
