Peace of Mind

My, oh, my! How much do we long for some peace of mind, especially during a pandemic that can have us fearing even the simplest of contacts! Can we even remember the days when attending to basic needs was simple and uncomplicated? In our current search for peace, we are discovering a few things about ourselves that perhaps we had not considered before. We know now, for instance, that peace of mind does not come to us, but through us. Other people and circumstances may be found in peaceful circumstances, but they do not bring them; they share them.

  A "local" center in us...

We come to discover that there is a kind of “local” center in us in which peace of mind is lodged; it becomes part of our makeup as we develop our sense of self over time, as we come to recognize who we are and how we operate. We may get rattled by our own fears and untoward events around us, but our ever-increasing sense of self awareness recognizes that spot in us that always awaits, and it may often surface as a sense of connection that is larger than ourselves, especially if we enjoy a spiritual practice.

We learn to trust ourselves...

We may not be able to legislate our peace because little of it lies in the intellect, but we can recognize it as it begins to surface through the din. It is at these times that we learn to trust ourselves to know what we need.
